So you have chosen your puppy. What next??
Well you need to ensure that you have your home ready for the puppy to arrive. The breeder should not allow the puppy to be taken home until at least eight weeks old. At this age pups are fully weened and are able to be separated from their mom and siblings.
Puppy proof your home-
– ensure that non of the plants that you have in the home or garden are toxic. There are many plants that are toxic to dogs including day lilies, daffodil bulbs and foxgloves. Also ensure that any toxic household chemicals or medications are locked away or placed in a secure cupboard
– You may want to consider a stair gate. To begin with your pup will need to be supervised when attempting any stairs, it may take them some time to get used to them. You may also wish to create a designated area for them to help them feel safe and secure, a utility area or crate is suitable. Ensure the area is lined with comfy blankets or a dog bed.
-Cover up any wires to ensure your pup cannot access them to chew or even become entangled in them.
-Make your garden secure. You don’t want an escapee !!
-Cover up or remove any furniture that you don’t want to be chewed. Even old furniture should be protected to ensure they don’t damage themselves!
Purchase the necessary kit-
– a dog bed
-a dog collar and lead with a dog tag with your details on
– bowls for food and water
-health care – wormer , flea treatment, toothbrush and toothpaste (ensure you speak to your local vets about the right products to use)
-grooming- brushes and shampoos
-a good quality puppy food and a few treats (you should ask the breeder what food they have been on as a quick change in diet can lead to stomach upsets)
-dog toys
