The 1992 order for the Control of Dogs states that when walking your dog in a public location, it must be wearing a dog collar of some kind, stating it’s name and address of the owner. This should be written or engraved on the colour clearly. Adding a telephone number is also helpful and can help speed up the process of locating your dog in the event that it goes missing. Some councils can land you with a £5000 fine if your dog is found to not be easily identifiable.
This law has a few exceptions
- Dogs used by the Police, armed forces or HM Revenue and Customs
- Dogs use in Sport i.e. Greyhound Racing
- Sheep dogs or other dogs for tending to cattle
- Working dogs for vermin control
- Guide Dogs
- Emergency rescue dogs
If for any reason your dog manages to lose their collar, gets lost after straying, escapes your home or is taken by thieves, then a microchip can act as a backup. The microchip national database can only be updated by the owner, so if a thief attempt to pass on the dog to a new owner, these details can not be changed.
